It’s a toll highway, so you’ll need 2,500 colones (about $5). Get some at the airport. (CEDA means yield.)

Get on the airport access road, across from the terminal. If you rent a car, you’ll probably be shuttled away from the airport towards San Jose as few rental companies have cars at the airport. If you do leave the airport, it’ll be on the Pan-American Highway. You’ll need to head back on it. When you do, stay in the left lane and take the airport exit.
 
When you’re on the airport access road, follow it until you are almost all the way to the end. Turn right on the very last road before the turnaround. If you miss it, you’ll loop back towards the airport and can try it again.
 
Now you’ll be on a frontage/access road that parallels the highway. You’ll come up a hill and join a main road in a small town. Keep going straight for about 3 miles as you wind through towns and neighborhoods. The road eventually makes a long turn to the left. You’ll pass a park with a playground on the left, while another main road forms a T-intersection. Turn right. 

Follow this road for about 2 miles until it ends at a traffic circle. Exit the circle to Highway 27 to Orotina and Puntarenas.


Follow the highway to Puntarenas.  After you get to Caldera, you’ll drive along the ocean on a long beach. Continue towards Liberia until you see the turn off for Puntarenas. The sign is hidden behind a tree and not visible until the last moment. If you think you passed it, go another 1½ miles to the Maxi Bodega store and gas station on your left, turn in there and then head back to the Puntarenas turnoff.

Follow the Puntarenas Road for about 6 miles. You’ll pass a Shell station, the stadium, the museum and, finally, you’ll see signs on your right for the ferries.
 
Turn right at the sign for the ferry to Playa Naranjo, follow the street to the end, then turn left. This is a very small street along the back of the waterfront. If cars are lined up on the right side, join them. Otherwise, continue to the stop sign at the intersection where the ferries are on the right side and park.


The ticket booth is across the street. The agent probably speaks no English. You want tickets for uno liviano (one vehicle), x adultos and y niños. Passengers must get out and walk on while the driver boards the ferry.

Buy tickets at the ticket booth, not from scalpers. Tickets are US $15 for one car with driver. Additional adult tickets cost US $1.70 each.

Ensure you’re getting on the Playa Naranjo ferry, not the Paquera ferry that leaves from the same terminal.

The ferry takes an hour and 15 minutes and departs at 6:30a, 10a, 2:30p and 7:30p. (Return ferries depart Playa Naranjo at 8a, 12:30p, 5:30p, and 9p)

Roma del Mar is 10 minutes from the Playa Naranjo dock. We can meet you, or:

Take your first left and follow the signs for Roma del Mar. The road leads to the T-intersection just over the hill. Turn left toward Paquera, then left at the first crossroads (there’s a gas station on the right). The road turns to gravel right away. After 1½ miles there’s a village called Bajos Negros. Continue on this road another mile, going up the hill, then leveling off. You’ll see a smaller road to your left as the main road curves to the right. Take the smaller road. (where you see the signs for Playa Blanca and Villas Roma Del Mar)


Follow this road – you’ll pass a small school on the right. In 250 yards you’ll see an entrance with the sign and columns of Roma Del Mar on your left. Take this turn, follow the road as it goes up and after about half a mile you’ll see a bright red building on your right. That’s the Villas Roma del Mar Supermarket and reception. Go into the shop and they’ll give you your keys and show you the way to your villa.
